How to Treat Burns

Treating burns is an integral part of First Aid knowledge because this type of injury can arise from a myriad of situations. Campfires, burning stoves, hot electrical appliances, and even chemicals can all be a source of minor or major burns.

Burns injuries destroy your skin and can lead to further complications. Knowing how to provide primary care to a burn wound can help prevent infection and further injury.

If a large portion of a person’s body has been burned; or if they were burned on an area of the skin that covers vital organs; or if burns were sustained on the face, hands, feet, or genitalia, call 911 immediately.

The first step in burn treatment is stopping the burning. Even after the affected person is no longer in contact with the item that caused the injury, the skin continues to burn. Cool the burned area by running cool running water over it for several minutes.

Examine the area for blistered, sloughed, or charred skin. If the skin is peeling off, this is evidence that the burn has caused the top layer of skin to be completely damaged and complications are likely. Charring indicates further damage to all three layers of skin.

After Care
For more mild burns, meaning reddened skin and no blisters, you can treat it with a topical burn ointment to reduce the pain. After suffering a burn, wear loose and light clothing that does not cling to the skin.
