Combustible Dust Explosions
When you are working in a Texas factory that has dust in the area, be aware of the dust explosion hazard. Although they may not sound likely or possible, dust explosions can be a huge hazard for anyone working in an area like this in Texas.
If you are working in an area where there is a moderate amount of dust, there are a few things that you must consider. To have a dust explosion, you must have 5 different elements for the explosion to be possible. The first thing that you must have for this type of explosion to occur is combustible dust. If the dust doesn’t have an explosive nature, there is no way that the explosion will occur.
Secondly, some type of oxidant must be present. This usually refers to the air in the atmosphere or the oxygen that you breathe normally.
Third, in order for the explosion to occur, the combustible dust must be in the air in certain concentrations. If there is too little of the dust in the air, it is not likely to be explosive.
The next piece is that you must have all of these factors in a confined area. This means that the dust and oxygen must be in a confined area to make sure that it is close enough to ignite into an explosion.
The last condition that you must have in order to have a dust explosion is the ignition source. This is the most important part of the whole process because this is what allows the explosion to occur. If you are lacking any one of these conditions then most likely you will be safe from an explosion such as this.
